In March 2020 I worked with a Melbourne digital agency to create a new web design for the County Fire Authority. The CFA has been incredible in protecting the people of Victoria during the bushfire crisis, so it felt great to be able to put my design skills to use to help improve their online service.
The challenge
The existing CFA website was extremely dated and presented some serious usability errors. Most importantly, key information was difficult to find; given the nature of the site, this was a serious issue.
The new design primarily focused on 'findability' of key information, strong usability all around, and a well-structured I/A.
In terms of visual design, there were some interesting challenges. Font choice was limited to Helvetica and the branding uses a primary red colour, which can be a little tricky to work with.
Design tasks I completed
- Created a set of homepage and inner page designs to support key organisation goals
- Explored varying options for visual identity and visual hierarchy
- Created information architecture and visual hierarchy to support findability of key safety information
- Explored different design options for client and stakeholder discussion
- Ensured website design met stringent AA accessibility guidelines
